The Chernobyl disaster of April 26, 1986, saw reactor number 4 at the nuclear power plant explode, releasing radiation far exceeding that of the atomic bombs dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. This tragic event remains the most severe nuclear accident in human history.
