Møller was known not only for his sharp intellect but also for his reckless lifestyle. The story follows his self-imposed exile in Paris and his travels across Europe during the 1850s. His life was marked by wild debauchery, which ultimately led to his premature death from syphilis in a French mental asylum in 1865.
