A Gentleman In Moscow

Beskrivelse

A Gentleman in Moscow follows Count Alexander Rostov, who is sentenced to house arrest in the Hotel Metropol after being branded an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal. Set against the backdrop of a changing Russia, this novel explores his life confined within the hotel walls.

The story centers on the Count’s journey of self-discovery and adaptation during decades of upheaval while confined to a single room in a grand hotel.

On June 21, 1922, Count Alexander Rostov-honored with the Order of Saint Andrew, a member of the Jockey Club, and Master of the Hunt-is led out of the Kremlin and through the iconic revolving doors of the Hotel Metropol. Instead of his usual suite, he is confined to a small attic room with a window no larger than a chessboard.

Declared an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, the Count faces indefinite house arrest. As Russia experiences decades of radical change, Rostov is stripped of the privileges that once defined his identity and forced to reconsider what truly shapes a person.

With the help of a glamorous actress, a grumpy but talented chef, and a serious young child, the Count unexpectedly uncovers new meanings of joy and purpose within his constrained world.
