Activating Arctic Heritage

This anthology showcases the results of the interdisciplinary research project, Activating Arctic Heritage, which explores cultural heritage within two Greenlandic landscapes recently added to the UNESCO World Heritage List: Kujataa in South Greenland and Aasivissuit–Nipisat near the Arctic Circle.

An in-depth look at Greenland’s UNESCO World Heritage sites and their cultural significance.

Organised collaboratively by the national museums of Denmark and Greenland and supported by the Carlsberg Foundation, the Activating Arctic Heritage project (2019–2024) leverages the international spotlight and unique research possibilities brought by these UNESCO recognitions.

This project presents, for the first time, a collection of new findings and perspectives on Inuit and Norse archaeology and history. It also examines the interactions between these communities and their ever-changing environments, alongside efforts to protect and preserve these important sites.

The anthology features chapters derived from papers focused on Greenland’s UNESCO sites and other protected northern cultural landscapes. These were originally presented at the 2023 international conference Research on Cultural Heritage Landscapes in the Circumpolar North, held at the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters in Copenhagen.
