This fresh cycling guide to East Anglia presents 21 carefully planned routes designed for beginners and casual cyclists. Spanning Norfolk, Suffolk, and Cambridgeshire, each ride comes with clear, step-by-step directions alongside fascinating background information about the area's history, wildlife, and cultural heritage.
All routes are connected to OS Explorer maps and relevant National Cycle Network (NCN) paths, complete with National Grid Reference (NGR) coordinates to help with navigation. Additionally, every route is available on the komoot app, where cyclists can access detailed route profiles, including elevation, surface type, and waytype data.
Using the komoot app on iOS or Android, riders can conveniently navigate each trail using their smartphones. East Anglia itself is a vast, flat region of broads, fens, and marshes under a wide-open sky, known for its tranquility despite being close to London and the Midlands.
As one of the oldest inhabited parts of the UK, East Anglia boasts a rich history from Paleolithic times through Viking and Roman invasions. Its landscape is shaped by canals, windmills, and hundreds of medieval churches. With mostly level, traffic-free lanes and a strong network of cycle paths, it’s an ideal spot for exploring by bike.
Most rides are around 30 kilometres, perfect for a half-day adventure. Nineteen of the 21 routes are loop circuits, making for easy travel, while several routes sit close to each other, allowing more enthusiastic cyclists to combine them for a longer ride.
Highlights include destinations such as Sandringham, Wells, Holkham, Norwich, the Norfolk Broads, Bungay, Thetford Forest, Ixworth, Diss, Southwold, Walberswick, Orford, Sutton Hoo, Ely, Newmarket, and Graffham Water.
