Bangladesh is a young nation with deep historical roots. The region of Bengal was split in 1947 when India gained independence, with the predominantly Muslim eastern part becoming East Pakistan. After years of struggle and a liberation war, the people of East Bengal achieved independence in 1971, forming the People's Republic of Bangladesh.

Most of the population lives in rural areas, with Islam as the dominant religion, coexisting peacefully alongside other faiths. Bengali, or "Bangla," is the common language spoken, alongside various regional dialects.
