In the 1840s, Finnish Orientalist Georg August Wallin embarked on a journey through the Middle East, gathering valuable insights into Arabic dialects. To blend in with locals, he adopted the persona of 'Abd al-Wali,' a Central Asian Muslim physician.
An immersive account of Wallin’s travels and linguistic research in the Middle East.
Wallin’s keen observation skills allowed him to capture the everyday lives of both Cairo’s urban residents and the Bedouin tribes of northern Arabia. His unique findings are preserved in diaries and letters written in Swedish, sometimes cleverly using Arabic script to avoid detection.
Although recognized by his peers as a distinguished scholar, Wallin passed away shortly after his seven-year expedition, leaving much of his research unpublished and largely inaccessible to the global academic community due to language barriers.
This volume, crafted by four experts in Middle Eastern culture and history, explores Wallin’s experiences across Egypt, the Arabian Peninsula, and Persia. It also underlines his significant contributions as an ethnographer and linguistic scholar.
