This book presents a comprehensive study of early urbanisation in southern Scandinavia, conducted between 2017 and 2021. It explores towns in relation to their surrounding areas before, during, and after their founding.

An interdisciplinary approach broadening the understanding of early urban development in southern Scandinavia.

The project From Central Space to Urban Place took a fresh look at early urbanisation by expanding the scope of analysis both in terms of time and geography compared to earlier research. It brought together experts from various disciplines to offer a more holistic perspective on how towns related to their hinterlands throughout different periods.

The main output of this research is this anthology, which consists of a collection of articles. Each piece can be read on its own, yet they are interconnected by common goals and contribute collectively to the overall synthesis of the project’s findings.

Throughout the duration of the project, participants shared their insights and results at professional events both domestically and internationally, highlighting the wide-reaching impact of their work.
