Beskrivelse
Harlem Shuffle follows Ray Carney, a furniture salesman on 125th Street, who leads a double life between honest work and shady dealings. As he juggles family life and a growing criminal world, Ray faces tough choices in a vibrant 1960s Harlem.
A gripping tale of crime, family, and survival set against the backdrop of Harlem's bustling streets.
Ray Carney appears to be a respectable furniture salesman, making a modest living for his family on 125th Street. He and his wife Elizabeth are preparing to welcome their second child, even if her parents from Striver's Row aren’t thrilled with their small apartment near the subway. Despite the outward normalcy, Ray’s background is steeped in a legacy of crooks and hustlers, and cracks in his respectable image are widening.
Money is tight, especially with all those installment plan sofas to cover. When Ray’s cousin Freddie occasionally drops off stolen rings or necklaces at the store, Ray doesn’t ask questions. He has a discreet jeweler downtown who doesn’t either. But things escalate when Freddie teams up with a gang planning to rob the Hotel Theresa, Harlem’s famed 'Waldorf,' and ropes Ray in as the fence.
The heist goes sideways, as these things often do, thrusting Ray into a dangerous new world. He now deals with corrupt cops, ruthless henchmen of the local crime boss, and various Harlem lowlifes. This pulls Ray into a fierce internal battle between the man trying to make an honest living and the crook he’s becoming.
As Ray navigates this double life, he uncovers who really controls Harlem’s streets. Can he keep himself alive, protect his cousin, and claim his share of the loot-all while maintaining his reputation as the trusted furniture guy?
Harlem Shuffle weaves an intricate plot set in a vividly recreated early 1960s Harlem. It’s a family saga disguised as a crime novel, a sharp morality tale, a social commentary on race and power, and ultimately a heartfelt tribute to Harlem itself.
