In Kingsfield, over 200 elderly residents need help, but there aren’t enough volunteers to support them. To tackle this, the headmistress at Kingsfield Comprehensive launches the "Helping Hands" programme, encouraging students to get involved.

A student volunteer project uncovers unexpected challenges in aiding the local elderly community.

Croydon Social Services face a big issue: too many older people in Kingsfield and not enough helpers. In response, the headmistress of Kingsfield Comprehensive sets up the "Helping Hands" programme, reminding her pupils that they will grow old too, so they should think twice before refusing to help.

The students from Class 5B dive into their volunteer work, learning a great deal about the difficulties faced by elderly neighbours. One major concern is a string of burglaries, with thieves seemingly having “inside information.” Suspicion even falls on Mrs Brown, one of the home helpers.

When Dr Rao suffers a violent attack and robbery, the "Helping Hands" team takes on the role of detectives. Peter discovers a footprint from a SWIFT trainer near Dr Rao’s kitchen window, leading him to wonder if one of the burglars could be a boy from his own class.

Teen Readers are designed specifically for young readers, with themes and content tailored to their interests. They come in levels 0 to 4, where 0 is the easiest, corresponding to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (A1 to B1).
