Back in 2012, a conference at the SAXO Institute, University of Copenhagen, focused on two-aisled houses, aiming to capture the latest research findings in this field. It quickly became apparent that Denmark holds a vast, mostly unpublished treasure trove of archaeological material that is incredibly valuable for scholars. The need to compile and share the most significant recent discoveries and insights in one national overview was clear, and this publication answers that call with contributions from all Danish museums responsible for archaeology.

The research reveals that hundreds of longhouses have been uncovered, showing both shared characteristics and notable differences. These dwellings range from modest 30 m² homes to expansive, hall-like structures nearing 300 m². Today, such houses have been found across nearly every region of Denmark.

This volume presents the remains of over 1,000 two-aisled houses from more than 500 Danish excavations, along with some finds from northern Germany. Despite this wealth of data, a detailed chronological and typological classification of these houses is still needed. This book tackles these challenges, featuring articles on houses from different parts of the country and including a comprehensive catalogue of all known Neolithic and Early Bronze Age longhouses in Denmark.
