An interdisciplinary look at the Husebyer: their history, distribution, and future research directions.

Since the early 1900s, over 130 settlements known as Husaby, Huseby, Husby, Husebø, and similar names across Scandinavia and Orkney have been central to historical, archaeological, and onomastic research focused on the Viking Age and early Medieval Period. These sites are closely linked to discussions about kingship and political administration during that era.

In March 2014, the National Museum Jelling Project brought together scholars for an interdisciplinary workshop aimed at assessing the current state of Huseby research. This gathering served as a foundation for a planned comprehensive study of Danish Husebyer alongside those in Sweden, Norway, and Orkney.

The workshop encouraged participants to propose new research directions across historical, onomastic, and archaeological fields. Key topics covered included:

• The existing evidence and dating of the Husebyer
• The origins of the presumed Huseby system
• Reasons for the uneven geographical distribution of Husebyer
• Current interpretations concerning their background and functions
• Identification of promising Huseby sites in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Orkney for future archaeological exploration
