This novel follows Lucie, a spirited and captivating dancing girl from Tivoli, and Theodor Gerner, a lawyer rooted in the conservative middle class. Initially, Gerner keeps Lucie as his mistress, enchanted by her charm. Eventually, he marries her, hoping to transform her into a modest, well-mannered wife.
However, Lucie's vibrant sensuality and unconventional background continually resist his attempts to shape her into the ideal spouse. What once made her irresistible as a mistress now makes her unacceptable as a wife.
Gerner’s efforts to control her behavior gradually turn into a harsh form of tyranny. In response, Lucie rebels, leading to a painful cycle of misery and despair for them both.
