Born in 1918 and active until 2002, Strömholm was a pivotal figure in Swedish photography. Although he spent most of his life in Sweden, France became a significant second home early on. In 1962, he founded the influential Fotoskolan photography school in Stockholm, inspiring a whole generation of Swedish photographers.
He is best known for his striking portrayal of transsexuals in 1960s Paris, which culminated in his acclaimed book Vännerna från Place Blanche (The Friends from Place Blanche). His travel photography from Japan, Spain, and the United States has also earned widespread recognition and is featured in several prestigious museums worldwide.
Christer Strömholm was honored by the Swedish government with a professorship in photography and received the esteemed Hasselblad Award in 1997, cementing his influence in the field.
