Discover the story of a small village in Thy that endured from the era of Alexander the Great to the decline of the Roman Empire. This settlement faced climate shifts, changing waterways, and possible conflicts while remaining isolated from the so-called civilized world.

A detailed archaeological study reveals the everyday life and evolution of an Early Iron Age Danish village.

Thanks to the villagers’ persistent use of chalk on floors and forecourts, combined with layers of sand and clay covering the site over time, a wealth of artifacts has been uncovered. These include bones, bone tools, ceramics, metal items, and macrofossils that offer a remarkable glimpse into the past.

A dedicated team made up of an archaeologist, zoologist, and macrofossil specialists carried out the excavation and analysis. Their findings greatly expand our understanding of various aspects of life during this period, such as:

• Husbandry and agriculture
• Hunting and fishing practices
• Bone tool production
• Metalworking and textile creation

Among the standout discoveries are whale bones, a lone cockerel, and possibly even a donkey-exotic pieces that enrich the broader historical picture. The research also traces how the village mound changed over time, with homes being enlarged or downsized and farms shifting locations.

The Smedegård publication fills many gaps in our knowledge of Iron Age settlements in Denmark, helping readers to vividly imagine life in the Early Iron Age.
