The Promise

Beskrivelse

The Promise is a gripping tale about a white South African family facing decline on their farm near Pretoria. As they come together for their mother's funeral, long-held tensions and broken commitments come to light.

A powerful exploration of family, broken promises, and the shifting social landscape of South Africa.

The Swart family is gathered to mourn Ma's passing, but beneath the surface lies deep resentment, especially from the younger members, Anton and Amor. They reject the values their family once stood for, particularly the unkept promise made to Salome, the Black woman who has loyally served them for years.

Salome was assured she would one day receive her own home and land, yet with each passing decade, that promise remains unmet. The narrative skillfully shifts perspectives, delving into the characters' inner thoughts and dreams with sharp, insightful observation.

Set against the backdrop of South Africa's transition from entrenched racial divisions to a new, supposedly fairer society, the novel’s title reflects more than just one family's unfulfilled vow. The Promise reveals tender and piercing emotional truths, capturing the essence of a family in decline.

With its confident and subtle storytelling, Damon Galgut delivers literary fiction at its best in this Booker Prize-winning novel.
