An intense historical saga of shipwreck, mutiny, and a life-or-death trial.
On January 28, 1742, a battered vessel made from patched wood and cloth washed ashore in Brazil. Inside were thirty gaunt men, barely clinging to life, with an incredible story to share. These men were survivors of His Majesty's ship the Wager, a British ship that had embarked from England in 1740 on a covert mission during an imperial war against Spain.
While pursuing a Spanish treasure galleon, the Wager was wrecked on a remote island near Patagonia. Stranded and starving, the crew spent months on the barren island before constructing a fragile boat. They then sailed over 2,500 miles across stormy seas for more than a hundred days.
Upon their arrival in Brazil, the thirty sailors were hailed as heroes. But six months later, a second, even more dilapidated craft reached the coast of Chile carrying just three survivors with a very different version of events. The first group’s heroic image was shattered-they were accused of mutiny.
The initial survivors fired back with their own allegations, accusing their captain and his supporters of tyranny and murder. While marooned, the crew descended into chaos, with rival factions battling for control of the harsh island environment. As the accusations of betrayal and killing escalated, the Admiralty summoned a court martial to uncover the truth.
The outcome was a matter of life and death-those found guilty faced execution by hanging.
