Discover the story behind a German airship base near Tondern, active during World War I. This base played a key role in Zeppelin missions before being shut down after a notable British attack in 1918.
The rise and fall of the German Zeppelin base near Tondern during WWI.
Just a few kilometres north of Tondern (Tønder in Danish), you’ll find the remnants of a German airship base used during the First World War from 1914 to 1918. This location lies in the part of Denmark that was ceded to Prussia after the war with Prussia and Austria in 1864, only to be returned to Denmark in 1920.
The base served as the home for the German Imperial Navy’s Zeppelins. From here, the airships launched missions to monitor the British Fleet’s movements and to carry out bombing raids on targets within Great Britain.
Operations at the base ended following a dramatic British raid in July 1918, which effectively shut it down.
In this book, Mogens Jensen draws on previously unused source material to paint a vivid picture of the daily lives of both the airship crews and ground personnel stationed at the base. The book offers a detailed look at the base’s brief but eventful history.
