Whaling at Godthul on South Georgia kicked off in 1908 when the Bryde & Dahls Hvalfangerselskab company, founded in Sandefjord, Norway by Thor Dahl and Ingvald Martin Bryde, received a license from the British Government. Unlike other companies in the area that operated from shore stations, Bryde & Dahl used floating factory ships moored in Godthul throughout the whaling season.

The whaling operations at Godthul came to an end in 1929, with only occasional visits to the harbour in the following years. After being taken over in 1920 by Lars Christensen, Thor Dahl's son-in-law, the company shifted its focus. It briefly worked in the South Shetland Islands but mainly concentrated on pelagic whaling, which allowed them to operate independently of British licensing restrictions within territorial waters.

This book is a condensed edition of Odd Galteland's original Norwegian publication from 2017. It provides a detailed account of the daily life and work of the whalers, while also examining the crucial Norwegian-British relations and policy matters that influenced the development of Bryde & Dahl and the whaling industry as a whole.
