Your Face Belongs To Us

Beskrivelse

Discover the unsettling story behind Clearview AI, a startup that developed an app capable of identifying anyone from just a photo. This groundbreaking technology can reveal personal details like names, social media accounts, and even home addresses, raising serious concerns about privacy and surveillance.

An eye-opening investigation into the rise of facial recognition technology and its impact on society.

Kashmir Hill uncovers the chilling reality of Clearview AI, a company launched by computer engineer Hoan Ton-That and politician Richard Schwartz, with support from controversial alt-right figures. The app quickly gained traction among billionaires and law enforcement agencies, sparking a debate on the ethical use of facial recognition.

Hill’s compelling reporting dives deep into how this technology is transforming our world. From major corporations like Google and Facebook-who ultimately deemed the technology too extreme to release-to governments using it for policing in countries like China and Russia, the implications are vast and troubling.

The book also highlights the inherent racial and gender biases embedded in the AI, showing how these flaws could further entrench inequality. Your Face Belongs to Us is a gripping true account that exposes our complicated relationship with technology-how it captivates us while simultaneously exploiting our privacy.

It serves as a stark warning: without proper regulation, facial recognition technology threatens to erase our anonymity and push us toward a dystopian future. As John Carreyrou, author of Bad Blood, notes, the frightening future once imagined in science fiction is already here.
