Among Herders Of Inner Mongolia

Beskrivelse

Explore a remarkable collection of artefacts from Inner Mongolia, gathered during two Danish expeditions in the 1930s. This book offers a detailed catalogue and rich insights into the daily life of pastoral communities in the region.

An in-depth look at Inner Mongolian pastoral society through artefacts and expedition narratives.

This volume presents over 800 items from the National Museum of Denmark’s unique collection, showcasing the everyday life of herders in and around their tents. It covers a wide range of activities including animal herding, caravan trade, hunting, crafts, sports, games, and ritual practices.

The artefacts were collected on two expeditions to Inner Mongolia led by Danish author Henning Haslund-Christensen in the 1930s. With extensive experience in Mongolian travel and expeditions, Haslund-Christensen and his team documented a culture that was little known and rarely observed by outsiders at the time.

Alongside the catalogue, the book offers a thorough account of the expeditions themselves. It details their routes, logistics, and the challenges faced by participants, from balancing scientific goals to navigating the complexities of the Chinese civil war and Japanese occupation.

The First and Second Danish Expeditions to Central Asia took place in 1936-1937 and 1938-1939, respectively. As the only foreign groups allowed access to the area during that period, their observations and collected materials hold significant scientific value. They provide an important record of Inner Mongolian pastoral life and material culture during a time when knowledge of the region was limited and fragmented-an issue that persists in some ways today.
