This catalogue accompanies the UK’s first major exhibition dedicated to Anna Ancher (1859-1935), celebrated as one of the most innovative painters in Danish art history. The show brings together a remarkable collection of her paintings, featuring recently discovered works from her home alongside a broad selection from her extensive career.

Visitors will see more than 40 of Ancher’s paintings, including some of her most famous masterpieces borrowed specially from the Art Museums of Skagen. As a central member of the Skagen artist colony in northern Jutland, Ancher is recognized as the most important female painter in Denmark’s history, though she remains less known in the UK.

Her work was a key part of the Scandinavian 'Modern Breakthrough' movement, which aimed to portray real life with honesty. Ancher’s intimate and observant paintings document everyday moments in the fishing village of Skagen. Influenced by her travels to Paris and the French Impressionists, she created vivid interior scenes and atmospheric landscapes where light plays a starring role.

The exhibition highlights her daring use of colour and her innovative take on ordinary subjects, proving her status as a pioneering modern artist.
