Beskrivelse

Discover a rare photographic journey into the heart of Baikonur Cosmodrome, the iconic Soviet space launch site in Kazakhstan. This book showcases detailed images of the once-bustling hub of space exploration, now largely abandoned.

An exclusive visual record of Baikonur, the legendary Soviet spaceport and its forgotten relics.

Baikonur Cosmodrome, established by the Soviets in the 1950s, holds immense historical significance as the launch site for the first Soviet spaceplane, Buran, in 1988. This spacecraft was developed in response to the United States Space Shuttle programme. Although the Buran programme officially ended in 1993 under Boris Yeltsin’s presidency, only one launch ever took place, in 1998.

Following this, many parts of Baikonur, especially those linked to these Soviet space missions, fell into disuse. The two completed Buran shuttles remain abandoned on site, resting in this hauntingly atmospheric location.

This book presents the first-ever published photographs of these remarkable sites. Photographer Jonk undertook a daring adventure, trekking 20km through the Kazakh desert under the cover of night, sneaking into the hangars, and spending three nights evading military security to capture this extraordinary photographic report.

Beyond the stunning visuals, Jonk shares the thrilling experience of exploring what is now considered one of the world’s most significant urban exploration locations.
