But this isn't just any café-its patrons are granted a unique chance: to journey back in time. In Before the Coffee Gets Cold, we follow four visitors who each hope to use the café’s extraordinary offer for deeply personal reasons. One seeks to face the man who abandoned them, another wants to receive a letter from a husband whose memory is fading due to early onset Alzheimer's, a third longs to see their sister one last time, and the last hopes to meet a daughter they never had the opportunity to know.

Yet, traveling to the past comes with strict rules: customers must sit in a specific seat, they cannot leave the café during their visit, and they must return to the present before their coffee goes cold. Toshikazu Kawaguchi’s beautifully crafted story, translated by Geoffrey Trousselot, invites readers to ponder a timeless question: if you could go back in time, what would you change?
