Beskrivelse
Bjørn Nørgaard is a pioneering figure in Nordic contemporary art, whose career began in the mid-1960s on the fringes of the traditional art world. His work challenges established art institutions and embraces experimental approaches, blending politics, economics, and everyday life into his creations.
An influential artist’s journey from radical experimentation to monumental public works.
The exhibition and book Bjørn Nørgaard. Re-Modelling the World highlight the remarkable path of one of the most groundbreaking Nordic artists since the 1960s. Starting out as a young artist operating outside the mainstream, Nørgaard took a critical stance toward key art institutions such as the art academy, museums, and critics. Instead of following the conventional route through the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Art, he trained at Eks-Skolen (The Experimental Art School), a collective that encouraged exploring the intersections of art, politics, economics, and everyday life.
This environment fostered innovative use of materials and new ways of working and presenting art. Nørgaard’s early practice was influenced by historical avant-garde movements from the early twentieth century, as well as contemporary developments in Germany and the USA, where happenings, installation art, and action art were gaining momentum.
The book and exhibition trace Nørgaard’s evolution from his radical, sometimes utopian early works to the more popular, narrative, and visually engaging art he is known for today. His career spans monumental public installations alongside ongoing material actions and performances, maintaining a consistent thread throughout.
In the mid-1960s, few could have predicted that his humble, fragile early works-often made from plaster, wire, cardboard, and textiles-would grow into influential pieces embraced even by the very institutions he once challenged. This compelling journey is thoroughly documented in the publication.
