Beskrivelse
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec is a key figure in the crossover between art and popular culture, especially during Paris's La Belle Époque. His work captures the vibrant social scene of the city’s theaters and entertainment world in the late 19th century.
Toulouse-Lautrec's art bridges the gap between fine art and mass culture, highlighting themes of social performance, gender, and identity.
Throughout the 20th century, art history often kept art and popular culture separate. However, this perspective shifted dramatically in the 1960s, with figures like Andy Warhol embracing celebrity culture and mass media in their work. Going back further, Paris during La Belle Époque plays a crucial role in this evolution, with Toulouse-Lautrec standing out for his open interaction with the entertainment industry from the late 1880s onward.
Balzac called the social theater "the human comedy," and Lautrec’s interpretations of Parisian theater life were deeply influenced by popular cultural forces. These forces not only shaped the culture he depicted but were also shaped by it, making Lautrec’s art as relevant today as it was over a century ago.
His groundbreaking and visually daring graphic works and posters were created over a short but prolific period from 1891 to 1901. In just those ten years, he produced more than 360 unique lithographic prints. Today, the Royal Print Collection houses one of the most extensive collections of his graphic art.
Unlike earlier exhibitions arranged chronologically, Toulouse-Lautrec. The Human Comedy takes a broad thematic approach. It showcases a wide selection of his graphic pieces, focusing on the city’s portrayal of the body and the complex staging of gender and identity within his work.
