Culture and Conflict: Nation-Building in Denmark and Scandinavia, 1800–1930 investigates the complex cultural currents that influenced Danish and Scandinavian identities. It reveals how what we now recognize as unique cultural heritage is deeply connected to the diverse national movements of the nineteenth century.

The volume features sixteen essays examining how different national agendas impacted political developments alongside literature, visual arts, and music. A key focus is on the cultural disputes that were central to the process of nation-building during this era. These conflicts involved drawing cultural and political boundaries, debating ideologies, and efforts to silence opposing cultural voices in the pursuit of strong national or Scandinavian narratives.

Contributors from Denmark, Britain, Norway, the United States, and Germany offer a wide-ranging, interdisciplinary outlook on these Nordic themes. Intended for both students and seasoned scholars, the chapters explore various aspects of nationalism, its cultural expressions and oppositions, while also re-evaluating the historiography of 1800–1930 with a more inclusive and pluralistic perspective.
