Danish-Jewish art reflects over 300 years of cultural coexistence, showcasing unique religious artifacts and artistic expressions. This richly illustrated volume explores the history, symbolism, and craftsmanship behind these treasures.

An in-depth exploration of the art and history of Danish Jewish culture through centuries of tradition and creativity.

For more than three centuries, Danish-Jewish life has flourished, inspiring fascination with objects like the Torah scrolls adorned in velvet and silver, and the delicate ringing of tiny bells during the Festival of Rejoicing in the Torah. Despite this long history, little had been written about these artistic and cultural treasures until recently.

During preparations for an exhibition marking the Jewish Community’s 300th anniversary, it was discovered that some silver pieces, previously thought foreign, were actually crafted by Copenhagen silversmiths. This revelation sparked the idea to document Danish Jewish art comprehensively.

At the suggestion of Dr. Erik Fischer, representing The Society for the Publication of Danish Cultural Monuments, a dedicated book was commissioned. To capture this largely unexplored area of Danish art history, contributions from art historians specializing in related fields were essential.

The book owes much to the enthusiasm and expertise of its contributors, whose work broadens the scope of Danish art history while shedding light on Jewish cultural heritage.

The book is presented in a large format (approximately 25 x 34.5 cm) with a striking two-tone canvas cover, embossed and protected by a dust jacket. It contains 590 pages and features 427 illustrations. The front cover displays a silver Torah shield from Denmark, post-1732, decorated with two lions flanking the tablets of the Ten Commandments, an ornate crown, and a detailed border of lines and leaves surrounding the inscription.
