Written by John Cleese and his then-wife Connie Booth, the first series of Fawlty Towers debuted in 1975, followed by a second series in 1979. The show starred Cleese as the irritable hotel manager Basil Fawlty, Prunella Scales as his sharp-tongued wife Sybil, Andrew Sachs as the bumbling waiter Manuel, and Booth as Polly, the efficient waitress and art student. Despite having only 12 episodes, the series won three BAFTAs and remains a top favourite in British sitcom history.
