Beskrivelse

Winner of the Man Booker International Prize 2018, Flights is Olga Tokarczuk's ambitious novel that explores travel and the human body in the 21st century. It weaves together stories from different centuries, blending travel experiences with reflections on life, death, and movement.

A captivating journey through time, anatomy, and human migration.

Flights takes readers on a unique voyage that intertwines historical and contemporary narratives. From the 17th century, we meet Dutch anatomist Philip Verheyen, who dissected and illustrated his own amputated leg. The 18th century brings the story of a North African-born slave who became an Austrian courtier and was later stuffed and displayed after death.

Moving into the 19th century, the novel follows the secret journey of Chopin’s heart from Paris to Warsaw. In the present day, it portrays the experiences of a wife traveling with her older husband as he teaches on a cruise ship in the Greek islands, alongside the haunting tale of a young husband whose wife and child vanish mysteriously during a holiday on a Croatian island.

With her trademark elegance and deep insight, Olga Tokarczuk invites readers to look beyond the surface of modern life and explore the essence of what it means to be human. Recognized as one of Poland’s most cherished authors, Tokarczuk has received numerous accolades including the Brueckepreis, Poland’s Ministry of Culture and National Heritage literary award, and the Nike Prize, which she won twice-once in 2009 for Flights. Her work has been translated into many languages, reaching a global audience.
