An ambitious tale connecting a vanished pilot’s legacy with a modern actress’s journey.

Shortlisted for the Booker Prize 2021 and the Women’s Prize for Fiction 2022, and recognized as a New York Times bestseller and a Time Magazine Book of the Year, this novel captures the extraordinary life of Marian Graves. From her rebellious youth during Prohibition America to the glamour and danger of wartime London, Marian’s quest for independence leads her across the rugged coasts of New Zealand and onto a remote Antarctic ice shelf.

Driven by her passion for flight, Marian resists settling down with her childhood sweetheart, instead living freely through a series of glamorous relationships. Her ultimate dream is to fly around the world from pole to pole, but her journey ends in a crash on a treacherous ice wilderness.

More than fifty years later, Hadley Baxter, a troubled Hollywood star, is cast to play Marian in a film. This role draws Hadley deep into Marian’s mysterious past, revealing unexpected truths and casting new light on the elusive pilot’s story.
