Beskrivelse
Lost Children Archive is a gripping and heartfelt debut novel that follows a family's road trip through the American Southwest alongside the harrowing journeys of migrant children heading to the US border. This powerful story explores themes of family, separation, and survival.
A poignant and urgent tale weaving together two parallel journeys across a changing landscape.
A family sets off from New York on a road trip, traveling southwest into the Apacheria, the areas of the US that once belonged to Mexico. The group consists of a mother, father, a boy, and a girl. They spend hours driving through deserts and mountains, stopping at diners when hunger strikes and resting in motels at night.
The little girl lightens the mood with surreal knock-knock jokes that bring laughter, while the boy shares knowledge and gently corrects the others. Despite their shared journey, the parents barely speak to each other, tension simmering beneath the surface.
At the same time, thousands of children are making their own perilous trek northward from Central America and Mexico toward the US border. Their journeys are packed with hardship: a grandmother or aunt packs a backpack with essentials like a bible, a toy, and clean underwear. They encounter a coyote-a harsh, intimidating guide-cross rivers on rubber tubes, and walk for days, rationing food and water.
Some even ride atop trains in open containers, risking everything to reach safety. Sadly, not all will survive the journey.
With breathtaking literary skill, Lost Children Archive intertwines these two stories, reflecting and echoing one another. The novel delivers a moving, urgent meditation on humanity in the face of cruelty and displacement.
