Rolf Gilberg’s work showcases costumes and ritual paraphernalia gathered from shamans in Mongolia and Siberia, now preserved as unique cultural treasures. These items were collected during the 1930s by two renowned Danish travelers: Henning Haslund-Christensen in Mongolia and Knud Rasmussen in Siberia.

While some of the material was previously discussed by Haslund-Christensen, Gilberg’s book offers a comprehensive description, analysis, and presentation tailored for an international readership. The study includes the history behind the collection of these objects and provides a well-informed overview of shamanic cosmology along with the diversity of shamans across the broader Mongolian and neighboring Siberian regions.

Drawing on over 40 years of expertise, Gilberg enriches his analysis with numerous original illustrations, including both drawings and photographs, many of which have never been published before. One chapter connects historical costumes and ritual items to the present by sharing Gilberg’s experiences with Mongol shamans in Mongolia during the 1990s.

The book spans approximately 300 pages and features around 200 illustrations, offering a thorough and visually engaging exploration of this unique cultural heritage.
