Mustafa Jemilev leads the Crimean Tatars, the original inhabitants of the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea. As a former Soviet human rights activist, he gained international recognition as a champion of freedom.

Born shortly before his family, along with 200,000 other Crimean Tatars, was deported by Stalin in 1944 from Crimea to Uzbekistan, Jemilev has devoted his life to advocating for his people's rights. His commitment led to 15 years spent imprisoned in Soviet jails and labor camps.

After the Soviet Union collapsed, Crimean Tatars were finally able to return to their homeland. However, Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea brought renewed human rights violations, echoing the injustices suffered after Russia's first annexation in 1783.

Although Jemilev no longer holds any official roles except his seat in the Ukrainian parliament, he remains the spiritual leader of the international Crimean Tatar community. Despite planning to reduce his political involvement after turning 70 in 2013, circumstances have kept him actively engaged.
