This is the very first map ever created of New Orleans, a city founded by the French and once the capital of the enormous Louisiana Territory. In 1803, Napoleon sold this colony to the United States to fund his wars, instantly doubling the size of the young nation.

The French Quarter, with buildings dating back 300 years, remains the city’s vibrant core, famous for its jazz clubs. The arrival of the Acadians, expelled by the British from what is now Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, introduced the Cajun culture, adding another lively layer to New Orleans’ identity.
