An in-depth tribute to the fearless and talented Formula One icon, Niki Lauda.

Niki Lauda was not just a phenomenal driver on the track but also a beloved figure off it. His legendary 1976 duel with James Hunt, famously portrayed in the film Rush, remains one of the most gripping stories in motor racing history. After a horrific crash at the Nürburgring left him severely burned and near death, Lauda made an astonishing comeback just six weeks later to defend his World Championship title at Monza. Jackie Stewart described this return as "the most courageous thing I have ever witnessed in sport."

The season finale in Japan saw Lauda and Hunt battling it out under treacherous weather conditions, with Lauda holding a slim lead and facing a heart-wrenching decision, a moment of high-speed tension that defined the sport.

Following his remarkable recovery, Lauda claimed the championship again in 1977 and, after coming out of retirement, secured the title once more in 1984 driving for McLaren. Beyond racing, he launched his own airline, which faced tragedy when one of its planes crashed, killing all 223 passengers on board.

Lauda later returned to Formula One in leadership roles, notably convincing Lewis Hamilton to join Mercedes, helping shape the future of the sport. Maurice Hamilton’s biography, based on extensive interviews with Lauda’s friends, family, rivals, and colleagues, pays fitting homage to a brave, supremely gifted, and deeply missed Formula One legend.
