This book is much more than a simple translation of the classic 1994 Danish edition, NORDØSTGRØNLAND 1908-60 - The Trapper Era. It has been thoroughly updated and expanded to meet the needs of English-speaking scientists, adventurers, and tourists exploring North-East Greenland.

It presents a detailed narrative of the pioneer era in the world’s largest national park, enriched with new material gathered by the NANOK expeditions from 2003 to 2007, published here for the first time. The book features a fully revised catalogue of over 350 historical trappers’ huts and houses, complete with GPS coordinates, alongside a wealth of new and archival photographs.

Among the stunning visuals are numerous newly discovered historical photos, contributing to a total of more than 1,000 images of both people and places-more than double the number in the original Danish edition.

The content is drawn from approximately 500 diverse sources, including published books, private diaries, and the author’s extensive interviews and correspondence with hundreds of pioneers and key figures over a span of thirty years.

Peter Schmidt Mikkelsen, the author, brings firsthand experience to this work. Having served in the Danish military’s elite Sirius Patrol from 1977 to 1979, he has visited North-East Greenland many times and lived in Greenland for a total of ten years. He is also the co-founder and director of the North-East Greenlandic Company Nanok and became the first non-British president of the English Arctic Club in 2021.
