Beskrivelse
Northern Emporium is the second and final volume showcasing the findings from the Northern Emporium research project, featuring high-definition excavations conducted in Ribe during 2017-18. It explores a wide variety of artefacts uncovered from this key North Sea trading hub in the 8th and 9th centuries AD.
Discovering Ribe’s early urban network through detailed artefact analysis and trade connections.
This volume presents 22 chapters that examine an impressive array of objects made from materials like pottery, stone, shell, glass, metals, amber, leather, wood, textiles, bone, and antler. The book highlights significant discoveries, including collections from workshops producing glass beads and combs, as well as rare items such as wooden furnishings and musical instruments.
The main focus is on reconstructing Ribe’s early urban community by studying these finds in their archaeological context. This approach reveals social roles and interactions between the town’s inhabitants and visitors to the emporium. Additionally, the book traces the extensive trade links Ribe had, following the movement of goods like glass vessels, pottery, and wine barrels from Western Europe; iron, stone, and animal products from North and Central Scandinavia; and beads and coins that journeyed from the Middle East and the Indian Ocean into northern Europe’s emerging maritime frontier.
