Beskrivelse
Discover the fascinating story behind Aggersborg, the largest Viking Age ring fortress in Denmark. This book delves into the archaeological journey that uncovered its secrets.
Exploring the history and significance of Aggersborg, the grandest of Denmark’s Viking ring fortresses.
In 1945, a remarkable find at the National Museum in Copenhagen sparked new interest in Viking history. A researcher came across an old archaeological survey plan featuring a circular earthwork that resembled the mysterious Viking fortress excavated at Trelleborg years before. However, this fortress was twice as large, revealing a much bigger piece of the puzzle.
Known as Aggersborg, this ring fortress is the largest of five similar structures built during the late 10th century under Harald Bluetooth. All five fortresses have since been recognized as UNESCO World Heritage sites.
This book follows the archaeologists who pieced together the story of Aggersborg, shedding light on one of Denmark’s greatest historical enigmas and the impressive Viking legacy it represents.
