Beskrivelse
Explore how Athenian red-figure pottery was integrated into different cultural settings beyond Greece and how these environments influenced its iconography.
Examining the adaptation and reinterpretation of Athenian pottery imagery across diverse ancient communities.
This book delves into what happens when Athenian pottery travels to various indigenous cultures, both within and outside Greece, and how these communities absorb and modify its iconographic themes.
To shed light on these complex interpretative questions, the National Museum of Denmark organized the 2009 colloquium "Red-figure Pottery in its Ancient Setting." Experts from different fields were invited to present case studies from their research areas, enriching our understanding of the wide-ranging significance and character of red-figure pottery and its imagery.
The cases discussed in these proceedings highlight how studying Greek pottery within its diverse ancient contexts-whether local Greek, colonial Greek, Etruscan, or other indigenous settings-offers valuable insights into the evolution and cultural adaptation of its imagery.
