Sámi Art And Aesthetics

Beskrivelse

Explore the vibrant world of Sámi art and craft through decades of growing activity among Sámi artists, the indigenous people of Scandinavia. This book delves into how their art and traditional duodji have evolved and gained recognition.

An insightful look at Sámi creativity and cultural expression in historical and modern contexts.

Over the past fifty years, there has been a notable rise in artistic expression from those who identify as Sámi, the only officially recognized indigenous group in Scandinavia. Alongside this surge, Sámi art and duodji, their traditional crafts-have become more organized and institutionalized, largely driven by the artists themselves.

Sámi Art and Aesthetics examines these changes, placing them within both historical and contemporary frameworks for an international readership. The focus is on the complex and evolving relationships between creativity and politics. Rather than comparing Sámi indigeneity, identity, people, art, duodji, and aesthetics to Western norms, the book explores how these elements engage with Sámi culture and their neighboring societies.

The volume features contributions from leading art historians and literary scholars specializing in Sámi art, craft, architecture, culture, and indigenous studies. It also highlights the work of prominent Sámi artists such as Johan Turi, Ivar Jåks, Outi Pieski, Folke Fjellström, Katarina Pirak Sikku, Geir Tore Holm, and Silje Figenschou Thoresen.
