The Candy House

Beskrivelse

A captivating novel from Pulitzer Prize winner Jennifer Egan, exploring the impact of technology on memory, identity, and human connection. The story revisits characters from A Visit from the Goon Squad in a world transformed by a groundbreaking invention.

An imaginative and emotional journey into a future shaped by memory-sharing technology and its consequences.

Set in 2010, the story follows Bix Bouton, a brilliant tech entrepreneur in search of his next big breakthrough. With four children and a restless mind, Bix encounters a group of Columbia professors, one of whom is working on a way to "externalize" memory-allowing people to access and share every moment they've ever experienced.

Within ten years, Bix’s invention, Own Your Unconscious, captivates millions by enabling users to relive and exchange memories. But not everyone is eager to embrace this new reality. Through a series of interconnected narratives, Egan reveals the ripple effects of this technology on diverse characters whose lives intertwine over decades.

Employing a dazzling variety of storytelling techniques-from omniscient narration to first-person plural, dual voices, letters, and even tweets-Egan masterfully crafts a world where some track and exploit desires ("counters") while others resist the lure of the Candy House ("eluders").

Brimming with insight into social media, gaming, and alternate realities, The Candy House offers a thrilling glimpse into a near future. Egan’s sharp exploration of our tech-driven, image-obsessed culture shines as she delivers a powerful, heartfelt story about the human yearning for genuine connection, love, privacy, family, and redemption.
