The Candy House

Beskrivelse

A gripping novel from Pulitzer Prize winner Jennifer Egan, exploring the search for genuine connection and privacy in a world where memories can be shared and controlled. Featuring characters from her acclaimed book, A Visit from the Goon Squad, this story dives deep into the impact of groundbreaking technology on our lives.

A visionary tale about memory, technology, and the human desire for meaning.

Set in 2010, the story follows Bix Bouton, a brilliant and wildly successful tech entrepreneur who is struggling to find his next big idea. At forty and a father of four, Bix encounters a group of Columbia professors, one of whom is experimenting with the concept of downloading or "externalising" memory.

Within a decade, Bix launches Own Your Unconscious, a revolutionary technology that grants users access to every memory they've ever had and allows them to share these memories in exchange for access to others'. This innovation captivates millions, though some remain skeptical.

Through a series of interconnected narratives spanning several decades, Egan masterfully explores the far-reaching consequences of this technology on various characters whose lives intertwine. The novel offers an intellectually stimulating and emotionally powerful look at a near-future society shaped by social media, gaming, and alternate realities.

Jennifer Egan elevates her insightful examination of our technology-driven, image-obsessed culture to new heights, delivering a fierce and exhilarating story about the enduring human quest for authentic connection, love, family, privacy, and redemption.
