Les Payne, a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist, began a nearly 30-year journey in 1990 to gather firsthand accounts from those who actually knew Malcolm X. His sources ranged widely, including siblings, classmates, friends, cellmates, FBI informants, police officers, and political leaders worldwide. Payne’s mission was to sift through hundreds of hours of interviews to create a clear and accurate portrait, separating fact from fiction.

The result is a monumental biography that unveils a previously unseen perspective on Malcolm X’s world. The title, inspired by a phrase Malcolm used to describe the awakening of his followers' determination to fight racism, reflects the book’s deep exploration of his life. This work situates Malcolm X not only within the political upheavals of his era but also within the broader context of American history.

The biography traces Malcolm X’s transformation from a street criminal to a committed moralist and revolutionary. Payne’s writing is vivid and cinematic, offering gripping revelations such as Malcolm’s secret meeting with the Ku Klux Klan and a detailed, moment-by-moment recounting of his assassination in Harlem in 1965. Payne also presents a compelling argument about the American government’s involvement in his death.

After Payne’s passing, his daughter and lead researcher, Tamara Payne, completed the biography, adding an introduction that frames the work’s significance. The Dead Are Arising stands as a captivating and insightful tribute, affirming Malcolm X’s central role in the African American struggle for freedom and his enduring impact on the twentieth century.
