Through her storytelling, Dora explores the mysterious fate of her missing brother, who vanished on the hippie trail in India during the sixties. She also reflects on her estranged daughter Beck, a stand-up comedy writer for Netflix whose work mirrors the ongoing culture wars.

The novel introduces a cast of characters connected to Dora’s life, including Danny, a fellow unfashionable writer she encounters at a festival; the van driver who disposes of her unwanted books; a careless courier who nearly hits her in the rain; her former lover, a discerning food critic; and her last remaining friend. These intertwined stories culminate in Dora’s own final chapter.
