The Scent of Earth after Rain is a deeply personal project by Mohammad Jaafer, capturing his memories and photographs of Sudan. It reflects his experience of displacement and the struggle to hold on to his past.
A poignant exploration of memory and loss amid forced exile.
This work is a heartfelt attempt to piece together personal memories and create a private archive preserving what remains of Jaafer’s photographs and memories of Sudan.
It emerges from the harsh reality of a forced diaspora caused by war, where Jaafer faces the painful loss of both his homeland and his memories.
The project also tells the story of losing all his belongings-including hard drives, equipment, and years of photographic documentation-when he arrived in Denmark in 2023, just before the war in Sudan began.
