It’s Midsummer’s Eve, 1648, and England is torn apart by civil war between a defiant King and rebellious Parliament. The conflict spreads far and wide, reaching even the isolated marshlands of the southern coast known as the Tidelands.

Alinor, descended from a line of wise women but weighed down by poverty and superstition, waits in a graveyard beneath the full moon. She hopes a ghost will free her from her abusive husband. Instead, she meets James, a fugitive, and guides him through the perilous marshes-unaware that this decision will bring disaster into her life.

In an age gripped by witch-hunts, Alinor’s ambition and skill with herbs set her apart, stirring jealousy and fear among the villagers. As a woman without a husband who suddenly gains wealth, she becomes a target of deadly suspicion, with her neighbors ready to take matters into their own hands.
