What Images Do

Beskrivelse

Discover the unique nature of images and how they differ from what they appear to be. This book explores the idea that images have their own existence beyond traditional theories of representation.

Exploring the active role of images in shaping perception and reality.

Images look like something precisely because they differ from what they resemble. This essential difference goes beyond what traditional theories of representation and mimesis can fully explain, yet it forms the foundation for any such theory. Many modern image theorists highlight that even Plato recognized images are not simply what they seem to be.

Instead, images possess their own distinct existence, which cannot be reduced to a mere concept but should be understood through their actions. This collection features fifteen articles that delve into what images actually do, with a special focus on architecture, design, and visual arts.

The book argues that it is the unique power of images to differentiate-their capacity to act-that enables them to look like something they are not and to create something entirely new. What Images Do emphasizes the vital role images play in producing and exploring aspects of reality that are yet to be seen or understood.
