Insights into city living and urban design, shared through memorable stories.

Camilla van Deurs fondly recalls her university days, especially the lectures of Jan Gehl, a professor known not only for his expertise but also for his exceptional way of teaching. Gehl’s approach involved sharing key research points through vivid anecdotes, repeating them until they became deeply embedded in the minds of students.

This book passes that knowledge from one generation of architects and urban planners to the next. A Good City, The Short Story features 24 brief tales that translate Gehl’s research into accessible reflections on everyday city life. It explores themes like the staircase-designed with architectural intent, yet often transformed into a resting place for newspapers and shopping bags.

The stories highlight the difference between architecture and urban planning on paper versus the reality of how cities are actually experienced. They delve into the significance of small spaces and the impact of grand urban experiences, making the complex world of city design relatable and clear.
