The Achaemenid dynasty, under rulers like Darius I and Xerxes I, sought to expand their control into the Pontic region, even though it lacked the wealthy cities found in other satrapies such as Egypt, Phoenicia, and Syria. After 479 BC, the Persians recognized the coastline and the Caucasus mountains as the natural limits of their empire.
Despite this, the Persian satraps remained actively involved in the Black Sea's affairs to protect the empire's borders. Over time, the local populations in this area became carriers and transmitters of Persian culture, blending regional dynamics with imperial influence.
